I think we all have a basic understanding for the need of a proper diet. We hear about it often enough through various media, maintain a balanced diet, eat plenty of vegetables, stay away from unhealthy fats, eat in moderation, avoid sugar, and on and on and on. Most of that is good information and absolutely should be followed if we wish to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

As endurance athletes though, we need to step up our focus on proper nutrition if we want to achieve maximum fitness levels as well as live that healthy lifestyle. As a group, we triathletes tend to beat our bodies up, we use (and sometimes abuse) them over and over and over, we deplete our resources (talking nutritionally here) quite easily with all of our daily training workouts. Yet on the flip side of those workouts, many of us do not put as much emphasis on refueling our bodies following those grueling workouts. Over time, this can lead to our body’s gradually breaking down and not being physically strong enough to finish races as we would like to, or get through a weeks’ worth of workouts, or not recover as effectively as we might, or even worse, our bodies breaking down to the point of not being physically able to do the thing we love – compete in triathlons!

What this section of our website is about is providing resources and information to you so that you have some assistance in properly refueling your machine (your body) so that none of that happens and you are more than able to meet the next challenging workout, or race. As I’ve said before, participating in the sport of triathlon (and other extreme or endurance type sports) means balancing along a fine line between being fit and healthy and crashing due to over-doing, well, everything! Many things have to work together in concert to maintain that balance optimally. Nutrition is a huge part of this equation. Your nutritional needs directly coincide with your level of activity and, let’s face it; a triathlete is pretty darned active!

So this section is devoted to providing those resources and articles that will help you understand how your nutritional plan affects your triathlon performance. How your race day nutrition differ from your regular training diet. How important it is to eat a protein bar or shake immediately following your hard workouts. How important it is to have a plan, not only for your training regimen but for your diet as well.

Make no mistake! Nutrition plays as important a role in your triathlon performance as any training regimen, any rest and recovery time, any mental or spiritual preparation you engage in. They all work together and your nutrition component cannot be ignored or slighted. Visit this page regularly to see what’s new and what you can use to better your performance in your next race and beyond!

Here’s to your health, to your fitness, to your diet!
